FIFTEEN Lynn is coming back today from Davao and I have decide to surprise her with the air conditioner she wanted for the bedroom. I went to Dumaguete early inthe day and looked in about 5 different stores and finally settled on a GE one (1) HP model. So I bought it and told the sales man I needed it to be installed. He said there would be a installation charge and we we negotiated it to 250php expensive but as a white guy I can't really do much about it. Around 1:30 the two installers showed up with only 2 screw drivers for tool. They then preceeded to tell me they would have to set it in the window so that 3/4 of it would be in the bedroom. Since what I know about AC can fit on a postage stamp I said ok. Once they finished installing it and turned it on a horrible sound started coming out and I was like "What the hell is that". Initially it was thought to be vibration, so they took the air con down from the window sill and we turned it on while it was sitting on the floor and it still was making that horrible noise so we all figured there is something worng with the unit and I would l have to bring it back to the store
So, we go back to the store and I told the sales clerk about what happened. He then turned the AC on while it was laying on the floor and just as before that same noise came on and I asked him what it was. He said it was the compressor and that that noise was normal and shouldn't be a factor with proper installation. I told him about how his installers had it installed with most of the AC in the house and he said only about 4" of the AC should be in the house and the compressor part of the AC should be outside sitting on an AC support. He then said I needed to build a support outside the window. Generally these supports come with the air con (at least they do in the states) Well as you can see these installers turned out to be the dumb and dumber of air con installers in the Philippines and maybe the world. The fact is they weren't even air con installers but assistants to the assistant of AC installers. Thy had no clue about how the AC or the compressor and how it should be installed. What a bunch of idiots. So the AC is fine and now the only thing I have to do is build a support because even their normal installers don't do this. So off I go back to the house where Glenn proceeds to build the support. The next day the official installers come and all is fine. Lynn missed her surprise but it all worked out for the best The moral of the story is (like many places) you have to be on top of everything here. Don't take anything for granted and always assume the worst case scenario and be prepared for it. I know now and have been advised by everyone, that when we build our house, we must be present every step of the way. Lynn keeps telling me not to worry because we will be in Davao and the builder will know ahead of time that if he fucks up he will be pushing up daiseys. LOL Yesterday February 11 we went to an engagement party. There is an American guy named Hap that came here to look for a wife. So he goes on the Internet and in a couple of days has this conversation going with a agl from Leyte. He convinces her to come to Dumaguete and after maybe one day of seeing her in person asks for her hand in marriage. Imagine a four day courtship. Well he is very happy and that is most important. She looks dazed and confused but I guess only good can come of it as she will be moving to good ol US of A. Hap is leaving today and will begin the fiancee' visa process wich takes about 7 months.
February 15....Last night we had the pleasure of spending the evening with some really great people we have recently just met. We were invited to the house of Mike and Palan Haft for dinner. They have been living in the Philippines for about 9 years. He is from Germany and she is a local gal from Dumaguete. They have a beautiful home in Dumaguete and another one on the beach further south in Zambaguita. And lets not forget their two lovely children. More importantly they are super nice people. Another nice couple there were William and Tessie. They go back and forth beween the USA, Canada and here spending half their time in the Philippines and the rest there in the USA and Canada. Funny how the Philippines can bring out the best in people.
