THIRTY SIX As you may know, the Philippines is an extraordinarily religious country and there are more churches and variations of Christianity practiced here than you could count. Here in Dumaguete it is no different. In fact Dumaguete probably hosts more Churches and has more missionaries than anywhere else in the country. Almost every day when I drive the scooter, I pass by numerous signs reflecting the name of a particular Christian Religious Church group. I thought it kind of odd there being so many in such a small area. I never realized there were so many religious offshoots of Christianity. Most all of these signs appeared to be fronting nothing more than what appeared to be a private house; some of them very nice and some of them very dumpy looking so I wondered if they were all legitimate Christian Church Groups. Apparently, there is a loophole in the private land ownership restrictions for foreigners. If you have a religious organization you can purchase property in the name of that nonprofit religious organization. Anyway, I decided it would be fun to chronicle just a fraction of them here on the site. I took all these photos in the span of 45 minutes. This photographic essay I call: IN GOD WE TRUST
June 29 - Oh I forgot to mention that we did get a guard about a week ago. His name is . Basically, he sits in front of the house 12 hours a day. He is very quiet, friendly and I don't really pay him any more attention than saying hello in the morning. Lynn does all the talking and in addition to his guard duties, has him doing some menial tasks like wiping down the Motor scooter and truck everyday. Carrying in groceries, stuff like that. We feed him lunch and provide him with water. Most importantly his presence makes us all feel more secure. Can't say how long we will keep him around. Probably at least another month or until they catch the bad guy.
JULY 2007 July 2 - Lynn has been driving me crazy about her wanting to eat Goat. While we were on a trip last week to see a property we are interested in we saw two of them tied to a tree but they weren't for sale. Finally Helen, the real estate agent we are working with said she would get Lynn one. This morning she delivered a goat and I was all excited about chronicling the life and death of this goat as I did with the chickens last year. However, as soon as I took this picture of it, I just knew I couldn't go through with it and the Goat became a pet instead and now has a name "Ted" even though it is a female. I guess it is natural not to want to kill a living animal you have seen up front and personal. Out of sight out of mind is the key to eating animals.
Nevertheless, There is still a good chance that Ted will end up on Lynns plate down the road. 2005
