FORTY August 12 - After 1 1/4 years here just in Dumaguete I thought it would be fun to show a photo essay using Joe as a prop. I wanted to reflect a cross section of what foreign men look like here. Most as you can see are in their late 50's all the way into their 70's and many are from European countries. This is more or less the demographic of retirees here attracted by the cheap living including: cheap beer and availability of young willing girls. Some of the men photographed are married or involved while most are single. This is not a commentary on lifestyle. Two of the photos show 2 guys I know who funny enough are wearing the exact same design shirt on the same day within 10 minutes of each other being photographed. Now that is weird.
August 15 - Today we sold our beloved 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.
This is the truck that we have had a love hate relationship with for the past 1 3/4 years. While, it was one of the nicer older model trucks you can find here in the Philippines replete with an incredibly plush leather interior and a powerfully responsive engine, it has also been prohibitively expensive to use and maintain. This was partucularly painful with the 20% or so depreciation of the dollar to the peso over this same time. I calculate I have spent over $5,000 just on repairs and general up keep and then of course there is the fuel consumption which was horrid at about 8 miles to the gallon. Well goodbye and a happy afterlife with your new owner. About the only good news is I bought it for P630,000 back in late 2005 at a rate of 55 peso to the dollar and sold it at P565000 and 45 peso to the dollar which means I was able to sell it for $1,300 USD more than what I paid for it. Sometime next week I plan on a trip to Cebu where I will be looking at some Diesel vehicles. I am considering the following: Honda- CRV; Toyota - Hilux Truck and Innova Mini Van; Isuzu - Crosswind SUV and Dmax Truck and a couple of others. 2005
