SIXTY FIVE February
27 - We just got back from a visit to the Pediatrician and got
some good as well as slightly negative news. For the good, Alexandra
has Blood type O+ which represents the most common blood type group
in the world so if she ever needs blood there is a good chance she
will have ample stocks. Other positive news is she tested negative
for: Congenital Hypothyroidism; Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia;
Galactosemia and Phenylketonuria. Don't ask me what they are as
I haven't checked into them yet. On the negative side we found out
through her screening that Alex tested positive for Glucose-6-phosphate
dehydrogenase deficiency or otherwise known as G-6-PD (aka Favism) is the most common human enzyme deficiency in the world; an estimated 400 million people are affected by this enzymopathy. This enzyme is especially important to red blood cells. If this enzyme is lacking or missing as in the case of Alex, then red blood cells are easily destroyed. When I heard this I was a little freaked out. Fortunately, I was relived to learn it isn't as bad as it sounds. What is really interesting and possibly ironic is if it weren't for my getting a very serious illness in 2005.....Lupus..... as well as having a major heart attack and the heavy duty medicines I have had to take for this, it is unlikely I could have gotten Lynn pregnant. The thought is the drugs have in a sense cleaned up my body. The other Irony is Lynn by all accounts is very healthy yet the likelyhood is she passed on the two defective X genes to Alex (Lynn has two X chromosomes). However, as remote as it may be since White Caucasians are not in the risk category I too might have passed on my single defective X chromosome gene as it takes two to make this G-6-PD happen in Alex. The simple take is G-6-PD is more or less a type of allergy. With G-6-PD deficiency you can have a perfectly normal life, provided you avoid the drugs and foodstuffs some of which are included on the list below. It is therefore of great importance to watch your diet and drug intake, and warn your physician or pediatrician. Symptoms
of G-6-PD High Risk Foods that must be totally avoided Fava
Beans High Risk Drugs (medicines)that must be totally avoided 1.
Dapsone - Antimicrobial for treatment of leprosy Herbs

It goes like this Watermelon
(frere Jacka) Watermelon (frere Jacka) Seems
like Alex really loves to be sung too. I will give it a try when
no one is around. Don't want to hurt anyones elses ears. 2005
